City Food Guide: Lisbon

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

After watching Somebody Feed Phil I was inspired to book a trip to one of the cities he visited: Lisbon. And let me tell you Lisbon was a treat, and I highly suggest it to anyone.

The main reason I went was to eat pastels de nata, Portugal's egg custard tarts. They are worth the trip, especially those at Pasteis de Belem. They've been making these custard tarts, as well as other pastries since 1837. And in all that time they really have perfected how to make Portuguese pastries. Although you can get pastels de nata anywhere in Lisbon, a trip to Lisbon is not complete without the pastels from Belem.

For incredible cocktails I highly suggest Cinco Lounge (Rua Ruben A. Leitao 17-A). It has an extensive list of both the classics and new modern cocktails with a twist. The bar is a golden beacon that glistens across the whole room. Go after dinner as it only opens at 9 and drink your night away with friends.

Another great restaurant is Chapito a Mesa (Costa do Castelo 7). It's next to Sao Jorge castle so stop by after your castle trip, and if you can, make a reservation in advance and request a seat by the window with a sea view (we didn't plan ahead so we weren't that lucky unfortunately). I ordered the cheese tasting menu (the first photo in this blog post is that meal) which we paired with a bottle of wonderful Portuguese wine that the waitress suggested. The cheeses were all spectacular and it was a delicious way to tour Portugal's cheese options. The restaurants's atmosphere is quaint with excellent service.

As I am writing this post long after having gone, I am only reminiscing in what were the highlights of the trip. I highly recommend Lisbon, and I am already dreaming of another trip (if only for those pastels de nata).
